Dai Naoshi (Hand plane sole scraper)
Plane body sole scrapers are useful tools to even out your dai (wooden plane block) bottom, or sole. Depending on the specific use of your plane, you will be shaping the bottom of your plane in different patterns. Keep one with your kit so you can adjust and fine tune your plane anytime anywhere!

Text from included directions sheet:
A simple way to adjust the bottom of your plane (the surface where the blade of the plane base comes out). Scraping the base is the process of correcting a base that has become misaligned due to wear or drying, and processing the bottom end so that the plane can be pulled easily with less resistance. Straightening the base has a large effect on the sharpness of the blade.
① If the blade is twisted or rounded, use straightening paper to flatten the bottom end. You can also apply woodworking paper to a flat surface (such as a glass plate).
② Use an L-shaped blade and, for the intermediate finish, leave 1 bu at the cutting edge, 2 bu at the butt end, and 2 bu at the top, and cut horizontally to determine the dimensions. For the finish, leave 5 bu at the cutting edge and 1 bu at the butt end, without leaving the top end. ③ Use an L-shaped blade to cut off the thickness of about 1 sheet of paper, leaving the cutting edge, butt end, and top end. The amount of material that can be cut off varies depending on the cutting angle.
④ Use a straight ruler such as a bottom ruler to check whether the surface is evenly shaved and finish the work. * The way the bottom edge is shaved varies depending on the work. * Using it in conjunction with a bottom straightening plane makes for more effective bottom straightening.
